Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals (DPRP) has firmly denied recent reports alleging that it imports finished petroleum products into Nigeria. The company describes the claims as incorrect and stemming from a misunderstanding of the intricacies of global refinery operations.

During a media briefing at the refinery complex, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, David Bird, addressed the swirling allegations. He emphasized that DPRP’s core function is to refine crude oil and process intermediate feedstocks into high-quality petroleum products and petrochemicals. These products, he stressed, meet the highest international standards.

Mr. Bird clarified that the processing of intermediate or semi-processed materials is a common and accepted practice within the global refining sector. He explicitly stated that this practice should not be misconstrued as importing finished petroleum products ready for the market. This distinction is crucial, he explained, to understanding the refinery's operations.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery operates based on a European and Asian merchant refinery model. This model integrates advanced refining, blending, and trading systems. These systems are meticulously designed to adhere to modern quality and environmental benchmarks, ensuring the production of high-grade fuels.

According to Mr. Bird, DPRP is committed to producing fuels that align with international environmental and health standards. Their gasoline is lead-free and MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl) free, containing only 50 parts per million of sulphur. Similarly, their diesel meets ultra-low sulphur specifications. These stringent standards contribute to reduced emissions, protect vehicle engines, and safeguard public health, highlighting the refinery's commitment to environmental responsibility.

To further illustrate the refining process, Mr. Bird displayed samples of both intermediate feedstocks and fully refined products. He reiterated that the Dangote Refinery supplies only fully refined, market-ready products to the Nigerian market. He emphasized that semi-finished fuels are unsuitable for vehicles and are, therefore, never released into the market.

The refinery's management aims to put to rest any doubts or misinformation surrounding its operations and its role in Nigeria's energy landscape. With a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, Dangote Refinery is expected to significantly impact the supply and pricing of petroleum products in Nigeria and the wider West African region. The clarification on its refining processes seeks to ensure public understanding and confidence in its operations as a key player in the energy sector.

The refinery's commitment to producing Euro V standard fuel also demonstrates its dedication to providing cleaner energy solutions for Nigeria, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. This focus on environmental standards sets a new benchmark for refineries in the region and highlights Dangote's commitment to sustainable development.
